| Abstract: | วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ที่จะวิเคราะห์ความเข้าใจ การตีความ และการถ่ายทอดเรื่องราวพุทธศาสนาในกวีนิพนธ์ The Light of Asia ของเซอร์ เอ็ดวิน อาร์โนลด์ โดยจะมุ่งวิเคราะห์องค์กระกอบสำคัญ 3 ด้าน ได้แก่ ศาสนา ศาสนดา และคำสอน ผลการวิจัยสรุปว่า ในด้านศาสนา อาร์โนลด์ชี้ให้เห็นว่าศาสนาพุทธเป็นองค์ความรู้ที่มีคุณค่าสากล โดยใช้ มโนทัศน์จากลัทธิดาร์วินมาอธิบายประเด็นเรื่องความทุกข์ในพุทธศาสนา และนำคำ อนุภาคเรื่องที่มีนัยทาง ศาสนาคริสต์ และคุณลักษณะเด่นของพระเยซู รวมทั้งขนบวรรณกรรมพุทธศาสนาเรื่องอัตวิพากษ์ และโครงสร้าง ชาดกมาประกอบสร้างกวีนิพนธ์ ในด้านศาสดา อาร์โนลด์ตีความและนำเสนอภาพพระพุทธเจ้า โดยเน้นความเป็น มนุษย์ผู้วิวัฒน์ พระพุทธเจ้าทรงเป็นมนุษย์ที่เติบโตในทางจิตวิญญาณ ปัญญาของพระองค์พัฒนาขึ้นด้วยการเรียนรู้ จากเพื่อนมนุษย์และสิงรอบข้าง ความรักของพระพุทธเจ้าที่ปรากฏใน The Light of Asia พัฒนาจากความรักในระดับ ปัจเจกไปสู่ความรักในระดับสากลที่ปรารถนาดีต่อสรรพสัตว์ ในด้านคำสอน เซอร์ เอ็ดวิน อาร์โนลด์เลือกพุทธธรรม มานำเสนอด้วยกัน 4 หัวข้อ ได้แก่ แนวคิดเรื่องกรรม นิพพาน ทิศ 6 และอริยสัจ 4 จากการวิเคราะห์การตีความและ การนำเสนอ พบว่า กวีพยายามนำเสนอสารัตถะของหลักธรรมที่เน้นความเป็นเหตุเป็นผล และประยุกต์ใช้ได้ใน โลกตะวันตก The Light of Asia เป็นกวีนิพนธ์ที่มีลักษณะเป็นสหบททางวัฒนธรรม กล่าวคือ เป็นพื้นที่ที่มีการปะทะ สังสรรค์ของกระแสความคิด มโนทัศน์และขนบวรรณกรร่าที่หลากหลาย นอกจากจะได้รับอิทธิพลจากตัวบท พุทธศาสนา เช่น Buddhaghosha’s Parables, The Romantic Legend of Sakya Buddha, Manual of Buddhism, The Wheel of the Law, และ ลลิตวิสตระ แล้ว กวียังนำลัทธิดาร์วิน แนวคิดทางวิทยาศาสตร์ กระะแสมนุษยนิยม กระแสโรแมนติก ขนบวรรณกรรมในไบเบิลและวรรณกรรมพุทธศาสนามาผสมผสานกันอีกด้วย |
| Other Abstract: | This thesis analyzes the perception, interpretation, and representation of Buddhism in Sir Edwin Arnold’s The Light of Asia. The study focuses on 3 dimensions: the religion, the Buddha, and his teachings. In the religion dimension, Arnold presents Buddhism as a body of valuable universal knowledge. The poet uses Darwinism to explain the concept of Dukkha. He constructs the poem from a variety of elements, including Christian terms, and motifs, and the figure of Jesus Christ. Arnold uses not only Western concepts, but he also adapts Buddhist literary traditions to create his poem, e.g., self-criticism and the Jataka pattern. In the Buddha dimension, Arnold presents the image of the Buddha as human being. The Buddha is a man who undergoes spiritual development. His wisdom matures as a result of lessons learned from people and his surroundings. The Buddha’s love expands from an individual level to the universal level aiming to help all beings. With respect to Buddhist doctrine, Sir Edwin Arnold introduces 4 disciplines to his readers: the concepts of Karma, Nirvana, the Six Directions, and the Four Noble Truths. The poet extracts their essence focusing on their rationality and application to the Western world. The Light of Asia is a cultural intertext: it is an area where many thoughts, concepts, and literary traditions interact. Besides being influenced by Buddhist texts such as Buddhaghosha’s Parables, The Romantic Legend of Sakya Buddha, Manual of Buddhism, The Wheel of the Law, and Lalita-vistara, Arnold constructs the poem from a combination of Darwinism, scientific methodology, humanism, romanticism, and numerous literary traditions from both Biblical and Buddhist texts. The Light of Asia is an example of orientalist literature celebrating the wisdom of Buddhism as the legacy of humankind. Sir Edwin Arnold creates a dialogue between the East and the West aiming toward the supreme ideal of mutual understanding. |
