Abstract:	เรื่องเวสสันดรชาดกเป็นเรื่องที่ชาวไทยเชื่อกันมาช้านานว่าเมื่อฟังแล้วจะได้บุญ ด้วยเชื่อในทานบารมีของพระเวสสันดรอย่างแน่นแฟ้นจนปราศจากข้อสงสัยใด ๆ ในเหตุผลและการตัดสินพระทัยของเวสสันดร ความคิดดังกล่าวนี้เป็นที่ยอมรับโดยทั่วกัน แม้ว่าเรื่องเวสสันดรที่ปรากฎในพระไตรปิฏกกับสำนวนอื่น ๆ จะมีข้อแตกต่างอย่างสำคัญอยู่หลายข้อก็ตาม แต่บัดนี้ความเชื่อดังกล่าวกำลังเปลี่ยนไป และการอธิบายแบบเดิมเริ่มไม่เป็นที่ยอมรับของนักวิชาการบางท่านในปัจจุบัน บทความนี้วิเคาระห์เรื่องเวสสันดรชาดก ว่ามิใช่เป็นเพียงแต่เรื่องแสดงทานบารมีเท่านั้น ยังเป็นเรื่องที่แสดงปัญญาบารมีของพระเวสสันดรอีกด้วย
Other Abstract:	The Wessantarajataka is a story that has long been respected by the Thai people. This is due to their firm belief in Phra Wessantara’s concept of “ danaparami” or charity as the highest aim of religious practice. This belief is adhered to even though the Tripitaka version of the story differs significantly from other versions on may points. The trend is now changing, however, and some of Phra Wessantara’s interpretations are no longer accepted by some scholars. This paper argues however that the Wessantarajataka not only shows Phra Wessantara’s highest deed in donation or danaparami but also reflects his supreme intellect or pannaparami.
