Abstract:	นักคติชนวิทยาชาวญี่ปุ่นส่วนใหญ่มองว่า ซูโม่ในวัฒนธรรมพื้นบ้านญี่ปุ่นเป็นพิธีกรรม ที่ประกอบขึ้นเพื่อทำนายผลผลิตทางเกษตร และมีความเกี่ยวข้องกับเทศกาล Tanabata และ Obon เพราะมีหลักฐานแสดงว่า ในอดีตมีการจัดพิธีซูโม่ขึ้นในช่วงเทศกาลทั้งสอง อย่างไรก็ตาม ความคิดเห็นดงกล่าวสามารถใช้อธิบายความหมายของพิธีซูโม่ได้เพียงบางส่วนเท่านั้น เนื่องจากพิธีซูโม่ในวัฒนธรรมพื้นบ้านญี่ปุ่นมีความหลากหลาย ทั้งในรูปแบบและวัตถุประสงค์ บทความนี้มุ่งชี้ให้เห็นแนวทางการวิเคาระห์ซูโม่ในรูปแบบต่าง ๆ บอกเหนือจากที่กระทำในฐานะเป็นพิธีทำนายพืชผล
Other Abstract:	Most Japanese folklorists believe that Sumou in Japanese folk customs is a ritual organized to predict agricultural produce, and related to Tanabata and Obon festivals since there are some historical materials showing that in the past Sumou used to be held in both festivals. This belief, however, can only partially explain the meaning of Sumou ritual. This is because Sumou in Japanese folk customs diversifies in both forms and objectives. The aim of this paper is to point out ways of analyzing Sumou in various aspects apart from foretelling crops.
