dc.description.abstract	คนขอทานในสังคมไทยสมัยจารีตมีสถานะทางสังคมต่ำสุดเสมอกับทาส แต่แม้ว่าจะมีสถานะดังกล่าวและถูกเหยียดหยาม สังคมสมัยจารีตยอมรับคนขอทานเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของสังคม อยู่ร่วมทุกข์กันในวัฏสงสาร โดยมีทัศนะและวิธีปฏิบัติต่อคนขอทานวางอยู่บนความเชื่อเรื่องบุญกรรม เรื่องเวทนาสงสาร เรื่องทาน และการให้ทาน กระทั่งเมื่อล่วงเข้าสู่ช่วงรัฐสมัยใหม่ สายตาที่รัฐและคนสมัยใหม่พิจารณาคนขอทานเริ่มเปลี่ยนไป คนขอทานถูกมองว่าเป็นคนที่ไร้คุณภาพ ไร้ประโยชน์ กีดขวางความเจริญ ไม่เป็นที่ปรารถนา คนขอทานและคนจำพวกอื่นๆ ที่ไม่เป็นที่พึงปรารถนาเหล่านี้จึงถูกกีดกันและกำจัดออกนอกสายตาและวิถีความเจริญของรัฐและสังคมสมัยใหม่	en
dc.description.abstractalternative	Beggars in traditional Thai society, though accorded with the lowest status, equivalent to slaves, in the Thai social pyramid, were nonetheless accepted as bona fide members of society. This was essentially in accordance with Buddhist teachings of, among others, karma, vedana, and dana. However, once ‘modernity’ set in, the way the state and the people at large looked at this particular social group changed radically. They are considered ‘non-productive’ and an obstacle to ‘progress’.	en
