Other Abstract:	Modern technology, particularly, computers have had a significant role in the functions and operations of libraries and information centers. The information explosion, especially in the sciences and the accompanying cost have caused librarians, users, and involved individuals to turn to computer technology. Computers are used in the information storage and retrieval for the production of indexes and searching files of documents which includes retrospective and current searching. Examples of large data base are MEDLARS and MEDLINE Chemical Abstract Service, ERICTAPES (PROBE), and DIALOG. Librarians can no longer remain ignorant about technical aspects of automation Reference librarians of tomorrow may become data base managers and will have to provide proactive services if they are to exist.
