Other Abstract:	Comments on the present structure of librarianship and notes that if librarianship is to become an elite profession, libraries must have a two-tier structure, and their administration must be democratized. Looks in detail at the particular case history of the establishment of a subject specialist structure by W L Guttsman, the university librarian of the University of East Anglia Library, set up in Norwich in 1962. Outlines the principles of the structure, the true position related to a philosophy of librarianship, and the general adoption of the system. Gives concluding remarks on the implications of the whole system.
