| Other Abstract: | Morrison’s study reveals that, as position in the hierarchy of the profession increased, librarians began to see themselves as professional and managerial, rather than clerical. Identifies and examines in detail the attributes which led to promotion to the higher levels of librarianship : the educational attainments of entrants which by concensus is the most important ; proper professional training, is markedly less important than a librarian’s general educational and cultural competence ; early commitment to librarianship as a vocation, would become a more usual attribute than it has been if librarianship established itself firmly as an elite profession ; mobility ; and number of publications, is important in the sense that a librarian must be a communicator of one sort or another. |
