Other Abstract:	The article attempts to point out that power, and influence go together and the library profession’s unawareness of the power of libraries has been a concomitant unawareness of the influence librarians could and should exert. The article reflects a philosopher and political scientist Jose Ortega y Gasset’s view of librarians’ potential influence and the way in which it should be operated by concentrating on the place of books and libraries in society. It includes also in this article several salient points relating to the library profession’s influence, e.g. political censorship, pornography, unionization of librarians, and confrontation between libraries and book trade.
